Common wax myrtle grows very fast, sometimes as much as 5 feet in height and width in a single growing season. This broadleaf evergreen shrub or tree grows quickly to 15 to 20 feet high and wide. Only female plants bear berries. It is not stoloniferous ( running grasses create an impermeable thatch that inhibits these natives from reproducing, and invasive weeds have taken away most of the territory for these plants.) and is the only evergreen wax myrtle with wedge shaped leaves. It is usually found in clay soils near streams, lakes, and other waterways, as well as in boggy grasslands and wet wooded areas.
